Insert your key and turn it to ACCESSORY MODE (Usually 2nd click, or the click just before cranking the vehicle). Some vehicles may need to be cranked/started for this to work, so if ACCESSORY MODE does not work, try turning the vehicle on all the way.
Insert the OBDII reader's male plug into the female OBDII plug on your vehicle. This is normally located underneath the dash/steering column. Sometimes it is located behind a fuse box panel near the foot emergency brake (on most vehicles). Consult your manual or check youtube (type in your year/make/model and "obdii port" for the exact location).
After the OBDII code reader is plugged in, it should display "READ" and then beep. It will then either display your check engine light codes that are stored in your vehicle's computer, or it will display the word "ERROR". If it displays "ERROR", see step 1 and check to see if you need to turn the vehicle on (or if it is on, turn it off and to ACCESSORY MODE).
Write down the codes displayed on the OBDII code reader's screen.
